Report: Mexico Forecasts over 90% Growth in Local Manufacture of 100% Electric Vehicles

Reports, data and projections also have a decisive power for the development of electromobility in Latin America, since key decisions for investments in the sector are based on these measurements.

In this regard, the automotive business intelligence and liaison platform “Directorio Automotriz” published the second edition of the Electromobility Mapping in Mexico, which aims to help visualize the scope of projects in the country.

The document includes figures that invite optimism regarding the massification of electric mobility in the country. From January to June 2023 alone, 47,781 electric vehicle units were manufactured, an increase of 37.38% compared to the same period in 2022. In total, since EV manufacturing began in Mexico with the Mustang Mach-E, 192,422 cars have been produced.

The platform’s report reveals that the Mustang Mach-E increased production by 36% so far, while the domestic sales success of the JAC E 10X led to a 137% increase in manufacturing during 2023, with more than 1,259 units.

Regarding the projection for the end of this year, Directorio Automotriz updated its estimate upwards, with a total of 223,640 electric vehicles made in Mexico, which would represent an increase of 181.4% compared to 2022, a proportion an order of magnitude higher than the increase in production of internal combustion vehicles in Mexico.

Likewise, Directorio Automotriz also presents a projection for the sale of 100% battery electric vehicles in Mexico by the end of 2023, which could exceed 10 thousand units for the first time in its history.

This would represent an increase of 93.5%. On the other hand, sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) would increase by 66% to 7,600 units and the conventional hybrid (HEV) segment would fall for the second consecutive year to just over 40 thousand units sold nationwide.

According to the publication, the supply chain has increased by 79.7%, only four months after the first report.

Daniel Romo, Business Intelligence Leader at Directorio Automotriz, explained the great impact the report has on operators’ decision making.}

“We will continue mapping the automotive industry at a national level in order to continue linking businesses among these companies. We project a sustained and accelerated growth in these projects by the end of this year, only about 49% of new investments in the first half of 2023 are related to these types of projects,” he added.
