Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) will approve the regulation for electromobility in the country on May 29, which will lead to the creation of an Official Standard on this matter and the formation of a working group to define electricity rates.
Julián Ángel Jiménez, Commissioner of the regulatory body, stated after the Future Energy Summit 2024 that, although a significant number of charging stations are increasing, the developers do not have the necessary authorizations.
In a review made by the local media Excelsior, the authority said that the regulation that was sent to the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (Conamer) in recent months, for consultation, is a first step to create the rules that allow an orderly development of this sector.
Starting Point
“Regulation is an initial step for an increasingly complex construction, as is the issue of tariffs, hourly charges, among other aspects, but it cannot be done if you do not put step zero.”
When asked about who would be in charge of charging the rates, he said that it should be all those who have electric stations, that is to say, private companies and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), but as long as the amounts are “fair” in order to promote electromobility throughout the country.
“We have received disagreement, especially from those who were doing bad practices in that, but the regulation has to set a floor”, explained Jiménez.
The official stated that there are companies that have been operating in this business niche for several years in the country.
The commissioner also assured that for the next month the proposal for the regulation of energy storage, mainly renewable, considered as a new business niche, is scheduled to be sent to the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (Conamer), which could be approved next June.
