Aiming to provide high-quality connectivity to areas where active mobility is the primary mode of transportation, Chile’s Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the Undersecretariat of Tourism, has presented the first model for interurban bike paths.
Thus, the initial purpose of the model is to establish 43 kilometers of bike paths, infrastructure that will be implemented using maintenance contracts for routes managed by the MOP.
In this context, the MTT will be responsible for the road design of the projects, while the Undersecretariat of Tourism will contribute to the development of signage and necessary additional equipment.

Furthermore, the authorities indicated that project selection will focus on areas where bicycles are a common mode of transportation, especially in small localities with high urban density.
Chile: Project Details
In this first stage, a pilot project will be implemented on the Pichilemu-Cahuil route, passing through Punta de Lobos, with an extension of 12 km. This model also aims to highlight routes with additional tourist value.
Additionally, 31 kilometers of bike paths will be added in Coquimbo, Valparaíso, and Ñuble, with projects in the final stages of development.
“This is a joint effort we are undertaking with other institutions, which not only involves innovating in the way we execute and implement better spaces but also responding to the interests of hundreds of residents who use bicycles as their daily mode of transportation, especially in urban travel, but also in rural areas,” said Juan Carlos Muñoz, Minister of MTT of Chile.
