ABB Recognized by Science Based Targets for Zero Emissions by 2030 and 2050

ABB was recognized in Chile by the Science Based Targets Initiative for zero emissions by 2030 and 2050. ABB‘s official website explains that in Chile, one of the initiatives developed in line with ABB’s sustainability goals is the Energy Efficiency Movement (EEM).

As part of ABB’s efforts to move towards a low-carbon society, the company established science-based zero emissions targets aligned to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standard.

This entity was established in 2015, with the aim of helping companies set emissions reduction targets in line with climate science and the Paris Agreement goals. SBTi verification confirms that ABB’s CO2 emissions targets are science-based and in line with the parameters of the initiative.

ABB was satisfied with the approval of its emissions reduction targets, after submitting updated Scope 1, 2, and 3 targets for 2030 and 2050 to the entity.

According to information published by ABB on its portal, the company’s short-term targets, approved by the entity, include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 80% by 2030, compared to a baseline of 2019, and reducing absolute Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030, from a baseline of 2022.

Regarding long-term targets, a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 100% by 2050, compared to a baseline of 2019, was approved, in addition to a decrease in absolute Scope 3 emissions by 90% by 2050, from a baseline of 2022.

Another accepted target was to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2050.

Following the announcement, Anke Hampel, ABB’s Group Head of Sustainability, noted that as a technology leader in electrification and automation, ABB is at the center of accelerating the energy transition. “We are committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2050 and have already achieved a 76% reduction compared to our 2019 baseline,” she highlighted.

On Scope 3 targets, the executive indicated that ABB will increase engagement with value chain partners on decarbonization and, at the same time, “we will provide products and solutions to our customers to enable them to scale up renewables, increase energy efficiency, electrify processes and reduce emissions.
