European Union Climate Program to finance Electromobility Project in Chile

One of Chile’s objectives is not only to consolidate electromobility in the major capitals, but also for the transformation to reach all regions of the country.

In this sense, the Municipality of Punta Arenas applied at the beginning of the year its initiative “Generation of infrastructure for electric vehicles”, which is part of its Communal Action Plan for Climate Change (PACCC), to a fund of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, a program financed by the European Union (EU).

A few days ago, the communal administration announced the details of the award of the international financing for an amount of up to 1,000 million dollars for a project that contemplates two stages: a first one of study that will extend until March 2025, where the communal capacities will be measured, the territorial regulations will be reviewed and the location of a charging network will be suggested; and in the second stage it will be of execution from 2026, which aims to install the first and pioneering public electro-lane of the commune.

Medium and Long-term Work

The Mayor of Punta Arenas, Claudio Radonich, revealed that since 2022 the municipality has a Climate Change Committee, becoming the second commune in the country to measure its carbon footprint.

“We are pioneers in having a Climate Change Action Plan (PACCC), which is operating and generating all these networks so that in 2030 our city can lower by 30% the emission of greenhouse gases,” stressed the official.
