Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD reduced its list of finalists for the location of a production plant in Mexico to three states, from which it has received a series of incentives to make its investment, the head of the company in the country reported on Wednesday.
According to Reuters news agency, BYD’s general manager in Mexico, Jorge Vallejo, said the inducements offered by the states included tax, land, management and preferential pricing advantages. He did not name the finalist regions.
In April, Reuters exclusively reported that Mexico’s federal government had halted incentives to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers under pressure from the United States. BYD has already said its Mexico plant will not supply the U.S. market.

Vallejo, speaking after the unveiling of BYD’s Song Pro plug-in hybrid SUV in Mexico, detailed that the company had not yet identified which models would be produced at the Mexican plant.
Some signals from states
BYD’s Regional Head for the Americas, Stella Li, said in May that the plant would have a “central location.”
The northern state of Nuevo Leon is a hub for automobile production and is slated to host a Tesla mega-factory. It will also host a new Volvo plant, the state governor announced earlier this week.
Meanwhile, the central state of Puebla has long had Volkswagen production, and BMW makes electric vehicles in San Luis Potosi, in the north-central part of the country.
