The Megalopolis Environmental Commission (CAMe) and experts conducted a diagnosis to promote electric mobility by 2030. They pointed out that in Mexico City only 2.3% of public transportation is electric or hybrid.
Through the “Diagnosis to promote electric mobility projects in the Megalopolis”, reported El Sol de México, they showed that, until the first half of 2023, Mexico City’s transportation system, made up of 92,083 vehicles, is headed by cars and trucks that still use gasoline or diesel.
The most complex transport in moving to electric or hybrid technologies are cabs, since there are 87,533 vehicles that use fuel in the whole city, compared to 574 hybrids and 15 electric vehicles that provide service.

Key Study Findings
The report details that public transport is the mode that moves a greater number of people in the entities of the Megalopolis (Sedatu, 2016), so it is necessary to generate public policies aimed at improving the quality of service, as well as reducing the pollution that comes from the different public transport systems.
Another transport that has been slow to make the transition is the Passenger Transport Network (RTP), with 1,519 internal combustion buses.
In contrast, the transports that operate 100% with electricity are the Metro with 378 electric trains, the Light Train with 12 units, the Cablebus with 682 cabins in its two lines and the Trolleybus with 442 units.
Metrobús has begun to change its fuel units for electric with 80 electric buses operating on lines three and four.
Given these figures, CAMe and mobility experts recognized that Mexico City is the entity in the entire metropolis with the highest number of electric and hybrid vehicles in public transportation, however, they are not enough to improve air quality, mobility and health of those living in the city, so they seek to generate alternatives for the capital’s government and those of neighboring states such as the State of Mexico, Puebla, Queretaro, Morelos, Hidalgo and Tlaxcala.
