Mexico: Second Phase of the Interurban Train “El Insurgente” Starts Operating

The Mexican government has launched the second phase of the Mexico-Toluca Intercity Train “El Insurgente”, which will positively impact the lives of over 5 million people by saving them up to 1 hour and 30 minutes on their commutes.

At the same time, it will reduce emissions as a sustainable transportation mode, according to Jesús Felipe Verdugo López, Undersecretary of Infrastructure at SICT.

At the inaugural event, presided over by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Jesús Felipe Verdugo López, representing Secretary Jorge Nuño Lara, highlighted that this new transportation option is a symbol of the Fourth Transformation and reflects the commitment to efficient mobility and regional development.

Sustainable Mobility in Mexico

This train will improve the lives of over five million people living in Zinacantepec, Toluca, Metepec, Lerma, San Mateo Atenco, Ocoyoacac, as well as in the Cuajimalpa and Álvaro Obregón boroughs.

The project, which required an investment of 100 billion pesos, covers 58 kilometers of double electrified track and features a fleet of 20 electric trains, each with a capacity for 718 passengers.

It also includes seven stations, four located in the State of Mexico and three in Mexico City.

Additionally, it will have the capacity to transport up to 235,000 passengers daily, significantly improving regional mobility. The high-tech trains will reduce pollution and offer more comfortable and safer journeys.

To date, construction has created 17,000 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs, demonstrating the positive impact of this project on the economy and the well-being of the communities.
