Chile: Codelco Partners with Toyota and Mitsui to Boost Sustainable Mobility in Mining

The world’s leading copper producer, Codelco, has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese companies Toyota Chile and Mitsui & Co. (Chile) Ltda.

This strategic agreement aims to collaborate in the development and testing of sustainable mobility solutions within Codelco’s mining divisions.

The initiative seeks to foster more competitive and environmentally responsible mining, reducing its carbon footprint through electrification.

The initiative’s objective is to create synergies that leverage Toyota’s expertise as a leader in the development of zero and low-emission vehicles, Mitsui Chile’s experience in forming strategic alliances, and Codelco’s extensive track record in managing world-class mining operations.

Codelco: Project Goals

The project includes intentions to share knowledge, conduct studies and pilot tests on-site to assess the performance and adaptability of zero and low-emission vehicles within Codelco’s various divisions.

“This agreement not only opens the door to new technologies for electromobility in mining but also enables us to move forward in our purpose of being a pillar of sustainable development for Chile and the world,” stated Felipe Lagno, Codelco’s Corporate Manager of Innovation and Technology.

“At Codelco, we are committed to innovating and leading the shift toward more environmentally responsible operations, promoting alternatives that create both environmental and social value. Collaborations with third parties are essential to accelerate these changes successfully for the future of mining,” he concluded.
