Southern Cone: Argentina Approves Major Tax Incentives for Electric Vehicles

The Energy Secretariat of Argentina’s Ministry of Economy eliminated the National Registry of Charging Infrastructure for Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles, aiming to remove bureaucratic obstacles and promote sector development.

According to the local press, this measure nullifies the mandatory registry, which was created in 2023 (Resolution 817/23) and had become a burdensome procedure, lacking a clear objective and only adding administrative workload for companies and citizens.

Moreover, the implementation of this registration meant more state intervention and a misuse of public resources, without resulting in an effective improvement in the promotion of electric mobility or providing tangible benefits to citizens.

On the contrary, the registry slowed down the installation and expansion of charging stations, adding unnecessary costs and delays for the private sector, such as the submission of forms and supporting documentation.

Tax Incentives

Argentina has eliminated taxes on certain vehicle categories, and in this context, one electric car stands out as benefiting from the policy.

The tax reduction will take effect starting in February, and the electromobility sector will benefit from this measure, as reported by Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo.

Hybrid and electric cars with a FOB Value of up to $16,000 will have a 0% tariff upon entering the country, meaning that the cost of importation is zero.

Until now, these models were subject to a 35% tax when classified as extra-zone products, meaning those imported from outside Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, or Uruguay.

The term FOB stands for “Free on Board” and refers to the vehicle price declared by automakers at the port of origin, before applying other taxes. This price is used to calculate import duties.

One of the vehicles that will benefit from the import tax exemption is the Renault Kwid E-Tech, an electric car currently manufactured in China, which began sales in Argentina in February 2024.
