Tamaulipas, through the Secretariat of Urban Development and Environment (SEDUMA), has joined the efforts of the Federal Government of Mexico to lay the foundations for an effective transition towards the use of electric buses in the country.
At a meeting organized by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (SECIHTI), and the National Bank of Public Works and Services (BANOBRAS), discussions were held on the demand for electric transport units over the next ten years, both at the state and municipal levels.
The head of SEDUMA, Karina Lizeth Saldívar Lartigue, stated that it is of interest to the governor, Américo Villarreal Anaya, that Tamaulipas participates alongside the federal government to generate economies of scale in the production of electric buses.
She also expressed the intention to ensure that this change is financially viable for the purchase or rental of the units, an option that could be applied in the BRT project being prepared for the municipalities of Tampico, Ciudad Madero, and Altamira.

Saldívar explained that, during this meeting, the organizers requested state and municipal governments to present detailed information about their public transport fleets, in order to understand their characteristics, dimensions, and passenger capacity by city.
Additionally, a projection of units of 9.5-meter electric buses required annually over the next decade was requested, as this model has been chosen for its efficiency in route operations and its capacity to replace smaller vehicles.
She added that this initiative to standardize information at a national level and ensure an efficient analysis represents a firm step toward strengthening sustainable mobility in Mexico, aiming to reduce pollutant emissions and improve the service quality of urban passenger transport.
