Chile is making significant strides toward electromobility, a cornerstone of its strategy to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a series of plans and actions.
Among these efforts is the National Electromobility Strategy, launched by the Ministry of Energy, aiming to ensure that by 2035, 100% of new light and medium vehicles will be electric.
The strategy also sets ambitious goals for 2040, including having 40% of private vehicles and 100% of public transport powered by electricity, while promoting the use of clean energy sources.
Achievements and Challenges
Chile has become a regional leader, with over 2,000 electric buses operating in Santiago, making it the largest electric public transportation fleet in Latin America. This initiative is part of the Santiago Breathes Atmospheric Decontamination Plan, which aims to improve air quality in the capital.
Despite these successes, the country faces challenges in developing charging infrastructure and reducing costs to make electric vehicles more accessible to a larger segment of the population.
However, the government, in collaboration with the private sector, is working on incentive programs and regulations to facilitate this transformation. The Committee for the Advancement of Electromobility is a key part of these efforts.
Thus, electromobility in Chile is not only a response to climate challenges but also an opportunity to remain a regional leader in sustainability.
