The use of biodegradable fuels is becoming vitally important for the transportation industry, due to their significant contribution to pollution reduction. According to data from the European Environment Agency, logistics operations are responsible for approximately 25% of CO2 emissions worldwide.
The production of these products is strategic for any country, because it allows a reduction in dependence on non-renewable fuels.
Terpel Ecuador is one of the companies decided to accelerate the transition of operations, and introduced to the market a line of biodegradable Mobil lubricants for marine, mining and oil sector machinery operating in sensitive areas for the environment.
The composition of these products minimizes their environmental impact on soil, water and wetlands, among others. They are made from vegetable products such as sugar cane, sweet sorghum, sugar beet, corn, wood and cellulose and from oils to produce biodiesel.
Characteristics
Terpel explained that the new line is made up of three series of lubricants, each with eco-friendly characteristics. First, the Mobil DTE 10 Excel™ series, with low aquatic toxicity and no Zinc; then, the Mobil SHC Aware™, whose range of high-performance oils is ideal for marine applications, as they comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Vessel General Permit guidelines, and are readily biodegradable and minimally toxic.
In third place is Mobil Eal Artic™, designed to complement the new generation of ozone-friendly and lower global warming refrigerants required by the Montreal and Kyoto protocols, and whose development was a joint work with leading compressor manufacturers and system designers, in order to ensure exceptional performance.
Terpel explains that as highly specialized lubricants, these products have degradation levels ranging from 20% to 60% in 28 days, contributing to the preservation of the planet and minimizing the consequences of spills, if they occur.
Positive Aspects
Biofuels offer many benefits, since by reducing the demand for oil, they could make energy supply more secure. Their use also reduces import costs for countries with energy capacity deficits and offers a better balance of trade and payments.
In addition, biofuels improve vehicle performance and increase the potential for agricultural and rural development, including new jobs and income generation, which undoubtedly helps to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
