A joint effort between Peruvian institutions, including the Ministries of the Environment; Energy and Mines; Transport and Communications; and Production, as well as the Metropolitan Municipality of the capital, Lima, the country has set important goals to reduce pollution in transportation.
One of these objectives is a 12.2 million tons of carbon (CO2) reduction by 2030, and replacing the use of gasoline, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas with electricity. These measures are part of the National Energy Plan to 2025.
Given this shift in policies to promote electromobility, private companies such as Kia and Cabify have contributed significantly to the energy transition.
The mobility app will integrate into its fleet the automaker’s New Niro, a hybrid vehicle that, thanks to the functionality of two engines, an electric and a combustion engine, generates 46% less CO2 per kilometer compared to an average SUV.
The car offers a wide range of benefits and has the perfect balance between efficiency and performance for drivers. It emits less polluting gases during its journey and consumes less fuel, thanks to the possibility of using both engines interleaved, according to the driving needs of the route. By 2023, Kia plans to have at least four types of eco-friendly vehicles in Peru, including hybrids and electric vehicles.
Users traveling in the Cabify Plus and Corp categories will have the possibility of having the car that picks them up be one of the Kia Niro models that will circulate in the city. In a second stage, the possibility of enabling a special category on the application for users to choose specifically to travel in these hybrid vehicles will be evaluated.
Environmental Alliance
Both companies’ executives have highlighted the need to transform their operations to make important contributions to the environment. For example, since 2018, Cabify has offset more than 375 thousand tons of CO2, equivalent to what was absorbed by 21 million trees during its first 10 years of life.
“This important alliance is part of our sustainability strategy and allows us to take another step forward in our commitment to drive the transition to electric vehicles together with our driver-users by 2030″, said Carlos Andrés Mendoza, country manager of Cabify in Peru and Ecuador.
Felipe Sarria, General Manager of Kia in Peru, said that the environment and nature are the inspiration for the company to create innovative products that continue to move and connect people. He assured that the New Niro, along with Cabify as a multi-mobility platform, will promote clean transportation on the streets of Lima.
