Apple Shuts Down Electric Vehicle Project

Apple reported the closure of its program to develop electric vehicles called “Project Titan”. The technology giant confirmed that it was canceled and the staff moved on to the development of artificial intelligence.

It should be noted that it was a plan that Apple kept secret for more than a decade, and contemplated the development of autonomous cars.

Project Titan engineers will now focus on AI, joining Apple‘s efforts in generative models.

Little Progress

According to Bloomberg news agency, Apple was developing Titan for more than 10 years. Reports on what it could achieve were scarce during that period.

Bloomberg notes that Apple was facing a cooling of the electric car market outside of China.

High car prices and a slowdown in demand, leading to production cuts and a price war, may have finally convinced Apple‘s leadership that resources were better spent on other products.

Even Tesla, a pioneer of the electric vehicle revolution in the United States, has warned that its rate of expansion will be “noticeably slower” this year.

The Titan project went through several phases. Initially, in 2014, it was to be a fully autonomous car, without pedals or steering wheel (at a time when enthusiasm for autonomous driving was at its peak), but the project has been rethought several times, reducing its ambitions.

Thus, the choice was made to develop an electric car, one that would be manufactured by a third party for Apple, and then became an automotive operating system.
