Argentina Advances in Sustainable Mobility Initiatives

The Director of Urban Mobility of the province of Corrientes, Argentina, Agustín Riveira, announced that a bicycle lane corridor will be implemented in the North Zone of Goya.

According to the local press, in a first stage, additional demarcation will be carried out on Pago Largo, Policía Federal and Ñaembé streets.

They detail that, although bicycles will not be physically separated from vehicles, this measure seeks to generate awareness and begin to create a regulatory framework for future stages of implementation.

In this sense, Riveira highlighted the importance of changing the mobility paradigm, providing benefits for health, the environment and the quality of life of citizens. The measure is expected to be extended to other areas of the City.

Other Transportation Modes

Years ago, the priority was the automobile, but now it is necessary to focus on people’s well-being and taking care of their health,” said Secretary Riveira.

He emphasized that the implementation of a healthy means of transport such as bicycles or public transport has numerous benefits, and it is essential to encourage their use and provide tools for their application.

Argentina is currently part of international bodies and agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. The country has committed to act to curb climate change and its effects, establishing strict goals to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions to be achieved by 2030.

It should be noted that transportation is one of the main generators of global emissions and, therefore, of climate change. In Argentina, 13.9% of total emissions come from this sector.

In view of the aforementioned problems, the National Sustainable Transportation Plan was created to generate public policies to transform the transportation system.

The program seeks to promote the transition and energy efficiency to achieve sustainable mobility in all modes of transportation, including private mobility.

The Plan synthesizes the national climate policy and contains the set of strategies, measures, policies and instruments to be implemented until 2030.
