Roland Chavasse, Secretary General of the International Lithium Association (ILiA), which brings together producers of 85% of the world’s lithium, pointed out that China is leading the global effort in the transition to electromobility in collaboration with Chile, Australia and Argentina.
It should be noted that lithium is an essential raw material for the decarbonization of the planet.
Chavasse explained that the production of Chinese electric vehicles has been possible thanks to the support of Chile, Australia and Argentina.
“This would not have happened without the lithium coming from these countries, which is a quite critical example that shows that the electromobility industry is global”.
Chavasse participated this week in the virtual meeting organized by the Chilean Pacific Foundation together with Chilean industry players, in which they addressed the challenges and forecasts for lithium production in Chile and the world.

Asian Leadership
The representative of the guild, which brings together companies from 25 countries, pointed out that China is today a leader in the manufacture of electric vehicles by number, in a scenario of climate crisis that calls for the replacement of fossil fuel cars with battery-powered units to reduce pollution.
“This did not happen overnight, but after 15 or more years of government support and industrial policies,” he highlighted in his speech on the international landscape of this developing industry.
China currently manufactures 75% of the world’s lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and electronics, and is the largest consumer and processor of this element that supplies its growing industry.
Chavasse assured that this achievement is the result of massive public investments, both nationally and internationally, and stressed that the Asian country has room to increase its participation in the electromobility market in the coming decades.
