BMW to Retrofit San Luis de Potosi Plant for Battery Production

BMW announced that its plant located in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is reconfiguring its facilities and began construction of its new Battery Module Production Center for electric vehicles.

In a press release, the manufacturer detailed that for this project they will also expand the body shop and assembly and logistics area.

BMW stresses that this move marks an important step towards the company’s sustainability and innovation strategy. “All these adaptations are part of the investment of 800 million euros, announced in February 2023,” the release notes.

Local Production

BMW also informed that Neue Klasse, the German brand’s new vehicle family, will be produced in Mexico starting in 2027.

The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) model will be launched as the first version of Neue Klasse at the end of 2025, assembled at the new BMW Group plant in Debrecen, Hungary, while the sedan will be manufactured in Munich, Germany, in 2026.

BMV announced that one year later, in 2027, it will start production in San Luis Potosí of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV); the Battery Module Production Center will have a surface area of more than 80,000 square meters and is key to the development of the Neue Klasse in Mexico.

In this regard, Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of BMW Group AG, responsible for Production, explained that the development of high-voltage batteries in San Luis Potosí will be part of its global network for the new sixth generation of e-drive.

“For this we are building five sites on three continents,” he said.

BMW explained that, worldwide, it locates its high-voltage battery production facilities as close as possible to its vehicle plants.
