Bogota Launches Electric Fleet Expansion Phase in Transmilenio

The city of Bogota began Phase VI of the Integrated Public Transportation System (SITP). The so-called “New Era” will allow the Colombian capital to have the largest articulated electric fleet in the world, thus consolidating its leadership in innovation and sustainability.

The New Era refers to the integration of a new zero and low-emission fleet, consisting of at least 613 buses, which will operate on the new TransMilenio system trunk lines.

Stage 1 is under development, incorporating 296 articulated and bi-articulated zero and low emission buses, operating mainly from the Portal El Vínculo bus depot in Soacha.

Scope

The operation of this fleet as of the end of 2025 will benefit more than 2 million daily users of the trunk component of the system in Bogota and Soacha.

In addition, a reduction of at least 33,300 tons of CO2 per year is expected, equivalent to the absorption of approximately 1,715,000 trees, improving air quality and quality of life indicators in the region.

The bus fleet must comply with the Euro VI standard, emitting zero or very low emissions of particulate matter. This not only contributes to Colombia’s sustainability and energy transition, but also supports the improvement of the population’s health conditions and quality of life.

According to Transmilenio, the selection process for this first stage of Phase VI will allow awarding a concession contract for the acquisition of the vehicles and the construction of the associated electric recharging infrastructure.

María Fernanda Ortiz, General Manager of Transmilenio emphasized that they seek to advance in the consolidation of a sustainable, innovative and quality public transportation system, as well as a better integration with the region.
