BorgWarner to Open Battery Factory in Brazil

The outlook for electric mobility is encouraging in Brazil, after record figures were registered in the registration of electrified vehicles in the month of January 2023.

According to figures released by the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE), the market had the best January at the beginning of 2023, with 4,503 units registered.

The guild details that in relation to January 2022 (2,558), the growth was 76%, while compared to January 2021 (1,321), it was 241%. These figures encourage companies to make significant investments in electromobility.

One of them is the US automotive supplier BorgWarner, announcing that it is preparing a new factory in Brazil to produce modular, scalable and flexible battery systems adaptable to any vehicle.

The start of operations and assembly of the battery systems is planned for the first quarter of 2023.

Large-scale Operations

With the acquisition of AKASOL, BorgWarner expands its capabilities in commercial and industrial vehicle electrification, positioning itself as one of the large global suppliers of battery systems.

“We are excited about the demand and market potential for these products and the opportunity to offer our customers a flexible, high-quality portfolio of electromobility solutions,” said Henk Vanthournout, VP and General Manager of Global Battery Systems in statements reviewed on the Magazzine portal.

He explained that the complex will produce innovative, global, state-of-the-art electric vehicle components, including the AKASystem AKM CYC ultra-high energy (UHE) battery system.

The plant will be located in Piracicaba, São Paulo, enabling BorgWarner to produce battery platforms locally for customers and will be implemented in phases to meet all quality and safety requirements.

In addition, on-site facilities and engineering will support customers with highly qualified repairs, maintenance and service.
