The Chilean government informed about the arrival of 42 electric buses for Coquimbo-La Serena at the Port of San Antonio.
The authorities detail that this new high standard fleet will be operational from September in the conurbation, to improve the quality of life of more than 700,000 people with modern and efficient public transportation.
In the official communiqué, the Chilean government emphasizes that the Coquimbo region is the fourth to have this technology, together with Santiago, Antofagasta and Rancagua.

The Undersecretary of Transport, Jorge Daza, pointed out that this is a key step towards the arrival of electromobility in the Coquimbo Region.
“With the arrival of these 42 electric buses to the port of San Antonio within the stipulated schedule, we are fulfilling our commitment as a Government so that the inhabitants of Coquimbo and La Serena will have more modern and sustainable buses during the last quarter of this year, and thus improve their daily quality of life with more comfortable and safer trips,” he said.
Operation Details
The project contemplates a total of 42 electric buses, which will operate from Monday to Sunday, with 326 departures on working days and with a maximum frequency of six buses per hour during rush hour; this under a contract for the provision and/or operation of its services with a duration of 8 years, extendable for two more years.
In this line, the head of DTPR Alan Sepúlveda assured that it means an important improvement for the region, not only in travel times – due to the increase in frequency – but also for the improvement in the travel experience of the users.
The new regulation proposed by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications proposes high standard electric buses, with USB chargers, segregated cab for the driver, low entry, air conditioning, among other improvements.
In this line, the on-board equipment will allow the implementation of the Red Regional app for the first time in the conurbation, giving passengers the possibility to check in real time when the bus is coming, through the application.
