Santiago de Chile establishes itself as the city with the most electric buses in operation outside of China.
According to data from Xinhua, a Chinese news agency, the southern capital tops this list followed by Delhi, with 1,650 buses, and Bogotá, with 1,486 electric vehicles.
Currently, it has approximately 2,500 electric buses in circulation, with sustained growth thanks to successive tenders that have allowed the renewal of the vehicle fleet.
The most recent one, held in 2024, will incorporate 1,267 new electric buses, increasing the share of electromobility in the public transport system.
According to the Diario AS Chile, of the mentioned tender, 70.6% was awarded to Grupo Cabal, a bus distribution company, which will deliver 895 electric buses manufactured by the Chinese company Zhong Tong, in collaboration with Gran América and Consorcio Conecta.
Key figures
Tomislav Matijevic, CEO of Grupo Cabal, stated to AS Chile that the tender allows reaching a total of 3,681 electric buses, representing 57% of electric buses in the system in relation to the total fleet.
“The progress has been remarkable towards a cleaner, less noisy, and less polluted city, and it will continue to be so in the coming years, with a public policy that is already transcending from government to government,” he said.
“The current administration has been clear in dedicating all its efforts in this line, as is also happening in the public transport of regional cities such as Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Copiapó, Rancagua, Coquimbo, and soon Concepción, Arica, Ovalle, and others,” he noted.
The new and modern buses include, among other things, USB charging ports, air conditioning, Wi-Fi network, and low noise levels, which have already generated tangible benefits in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.
