Chile introduces new electric buses in Antofagasta

Antofagasta, Chile took a new step towards electromobility with the incorporation of the first four electric buses on line 107, in the northern sector of the city.

According to local media Soy Chile, the arrival of the units, which took more than a year of work, was made possible thanks to an investment of $11 billion from the Regional Government (GORE), aimed at renewing the public transport fleets and improving the quality of the service.

The incorporation of these first buses is only the beginning. According to the GORE, the acquisition of new units for other public transport lines in Antofagasta is already underway. These are expected to arrive soon.

Improvement for Users

The GORE’s Infrastructure and Transport Manager, David Martínez, described this initiative as a significant improvement for public transport users.

“This represents a real change for people who did not find some lines useful because of their route. These new buses are proof that things are being done right. They will not only offer a more comfortable service for passengers, but also better working conditions for drivers,” he said.

Martínez also expressed the intention to extend this modernization to other municipalities in the region. “Our goal is for the entire public transport fleet to reach this standard, including localities such as Calama and Tocopilla,” he added.

The implementation of these vehicles responds to a strategy of adaptation to the requirements of electromobility. Alberto Rodríguez, Representative of Line 107, highlighted the effort behind this project.

“We started working on this initiative more than a year ago because we believe that the future of collective transport is in electromobility. We visited Santiago to learn how these buses operate and we resolved doubts about charging. Finally, we decided to take the risk because we want to remain competitive and maintain our position over time,” he explained.
