Chile: Regional Mobility Roundtable Sessions Begin

Chile began with the working sessions of the regional electromobility table, an initiative of the Regional Government in which different actors participate, including educational and transportation authorities, academics, unions and businessmen.

Óscar Ferrel, Head of the Infrastructure and Transportation Division, explained that this is a joint initiative between the public sector and the Universidad Federico Santa María (USM).

The program seeks to organize the different segments of the transportation area, from collective cabs to cargo vehicles, as well as training professionals who can provide electromobility services.

Opportunity Niche

Ferrel pointed out that the region sees an opportunity in the sense of joining an issue of national interest.

“This has to do with certain agreements that have been reached in the COP, in environmental summits, and the country has committed to certain goals regarding the reduction of the carbon footprint,” he said.

“It is very important that the region takes a role, since it has a group of universities and technical training institutes. There are jobs and associated investments here and we want to participate in that,” said Ferrel.

Víctor Valdebenito, Director of the FIC project “Electromobility and Technology for Regional Development”, explained that there is technology, such as the electric car, which in one way or another will have an impact.

What the roundtable seeks is to generate inputs so that, when a regional electromobility policy is finally built, all those who are impacted, can know how it will happen and what the solutions for it are,” he said.

He added that universities have to work with the state for the benefit of citizens. “A university that does not see its environment is a university that does not exist. Therefore, what we are looking for through these FIC projects is to have an impact on the environment and give back what the State does for the university (…) What we are looking for with this roundtable is that the important actors, which we identify within electromobility, give their opinion and participate in this system,” he said.
