Chilean Firefighters Unveil First Electric Water Tanker in Latin America

The Fire Department of Santiago (CBS) becomes the first firefighting institution in Latin America to have an electric fire truck, with support from SQM Lithium and Copec Voltex.

The Rosenbauer RTX was presented to the public, reaffirming the institution’s pioneering position that has inspired it for over 160 years of history and its commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technologies in community protection and safety.

The Superintendent of the Santiago Fire Department, Gabriel Huerta Torres, revealed that it has been a long journey since this innovative idea was conceived in 2022, becoming a symbol of continuous effort to improve operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of their activities.

“This milestone is part of the electromobility commitment we have undertaken because we want to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for the planet,” he said.

Process Details

The project was assigned to the 5th Fire Company of Santiago, Bomba Arturo Prat, and was jointly financed by private companies SQM Lithium and Copec Voltex, along with the CBS itself.

With the arrival of the machine, the phase of standardization and training now begins so that volunteers can learn about the new truck technology and its equipment. The acquisition is expected to be operational on the streets of the capital within the coming weeks.

This electric fire truck is part of a broader CBS strategic plan aimed at incorporating electromobility into its operations, with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions and moving towards a more sustainable and modern fleet.

The CBS’s connection to electromobility also includes an agreement with the companies SQM Lithium, Copec, BMW, and Kia, along with the incorporation of three electric vehicles from the latter brand for the Command Unit.
