Chile’s Seremi of Energy Backs Investment of 1.3 Billion Pesos for Purchase of Electric Taxis

The Chilean Seremi of Energy is promoting an initiative of 1.3 billion pesos for the purchase of electric cabs in Antofagasta and Calama, specifically to obtain 60 cars for the cab service in both cities.

All within the framework of the “Mi Taxi Eléctrico Región de Antofagasta” program, aimed at encouraging cab drivers to change their fuel-powered cars for electric ones. In this sense, the planning and development process of this program has involved minor public transport unions, drivers and government authorities of both cities.

The collaboration between several institutions has been highlighted by the Seremi de Energía in the implementation of this program, which will provide flexible co-financing, ranging between $12 and $16 million, to owners of basic cabs and urban buses in Antofagasta and Calama for the acquisition of electric vehicles.

In addition to the cost of the vehicles, this financing will also cover the delivery and installation of a residential charger. Furthermore, the transition to electric vehicles will boost environmental sustainability while resulting in considerable savings for drivers.  

In the Metropolitan Region, for example, drivers who drive an average of 3,000 km per month can expect an estimated monthly savings of between $250,000 and $333,333 in fuel.
