China on the Brink of a Historic Milestone in Electric Vehicle Sales

In 2025, electric vehicle sales in China are expected to surpass those of combustion vehicles, representing a large-scale achievement.

According to a report by China EV100, sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) are projected to reach 12 million units, marking a 30% growth compared to 2024 and more than double the 5.9 million cars sold in 2022.

This increase is driven by the growing adoption of electric vehicles and government policies, such as subsidies, that promote the electrification of transportation.

Projections

It is estimated that NEVs will account for over 55% of total vehicle sales in the Chinese market, surpassing combustion cars for the first time.

Additionally, plug-in hybrid vehicles and extended-range vehicles are expected to gain prominence, comprising nearly 50% of the NEV market in 2025.

Meanwhile, sales of traditional combustion engine cars are anticipated to decline by more than 10% next year to below 11 million units.

The growth in electric vehicle sales in China is also accompanied by the integration of smart technologies into cars. By 2025, 65% of passenger vehicles are expected to feature level 2 or higher autonomous driving capabilities.

These features, once reserved for luxury vehicles, are now available in more affordable models.
