Colombia: 246% Increase in Electric Vehicle Sales

The sale of electric vehicles in Colombia reached historic figures in November 2024, according to a joint report by Fenalco and Andi.

The report highlights a 246% increase in vehicle registrations compared to the same month in 2023, showcasing a shift in preferences towards more sustainable and efficient mobility.

In this context, programmed savings have become a key tool to facilitate the acquisition of these vehicles, allowing individuals to fulfill the dream of owning an electric vehicle without jeopardizing their financial stability.

In Numbers

The Fenalco and Andi report reveals that while 457 electric vehicles were registered in November 2023, this figure rose to 1,580 units in the same month of 2024.

Although December’s final numbers are still pending, this growth could make 2024 the year with the most significant progress in the adoption of this technology in Colombia.

The increase in sales is attributed to several factors, including:

  • Tax incentives: Electric vehicle buyers benefit from reductions in taxes such as VAT and import tariffs.
  • Exemption from “pico y placa”: This perk is particularly appealing in cities like Bogotá and Medellín, where vehicle restrictions impact daily mobility.
  • Greater market availability: The availability of a more diverse and accessible range of models has made this option a viable alternative for a larger number of Colombians.

Challenges in Acquiring an Electric Vehicle in Colombia

Despite these advancements, the initial cost of electric vehicles remains a significant barrier for many potential buyers.
