The Curitiba city has taken a step forward in sustainable mobility by incorporating a Volvo electric truck for waste collection, scheduled to arrive during the first half of 2024.
The move is part of the city’s plans to combat climate change and improve urban sustainability, where the decision to adopt electric technology for the cleaning service comes at a key moment, as approximately 66% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation, according to the Municipal Environment Secretariat.
“Our idea is to show the future, because the future is the best present for Curitiba. Volvo brought this electric urban waste collection truck to start providing service in Curitiba on a trial basis,” said Rafael Greca, Mayor of Curitiba.

Volvo’s Electric Truck Features
Volvo’s electric truck, with a gross weight of 22 tons and a load capacity of around 8 tons of waste, represents a significant technological advance compared to traditional vehicles used for waste collection.
However, it is important to note that its load capacity is reduced to 1,500 kg when driving on the highway, due to specific regulations for vehicles with three axles.
Besides, the positive environmental impact of this adoption is remarkable, since it is estimated that, with the incorporation of the truck, Curitiba will reduce approximately 60 tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
In addition to its environmental benefits, Volvo‘s electric truck also offers an estimated range of 150 to 180 kilometers without the need for recharging, ideal for waste collection operations in urban areas.
“This truck was manufactured at Volvo’s plant in Sweden and has Brazilian bodywork. We are going to start testing because we are in a hurry to get to the future and preferably to a future without pollution,” Greca concluded.
