Global innovation: first articulated-dual electric buses in the world

The announcement was made by Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán and TransMilenio General Manager María Fernanda Ortiz, who confirmed that the new electric buses in Bogotá will begin operating in the first half of 2026.

These buses are designed to run on both exclusive bus lanes and mixed-traffic roads, adapting to new infrastructure like the Ciudad de Cali and Carrera 68 avenues.

The incoming fleet includes 25 articulated-duals, 68 mid-size buses (busetones), and 8 standard buses (padrones), replacing older units from Phase III of the system.

This upgrade reflects Bogotá’s commitment to a more inclusive, accessible, and environmentally responsible public transport network.

Accessibility, equity, and technology in public transport

The new electric buses in Bogotá will feature improved accessibility, such as wheelchair spaces, priority seating, USB ports, weight sensors, and surveillance cameras. New signage will guide users based on trip priority, care-related travel, and non-priority use.

Additionally, the agreement includes a gender equity clause, requiring that at least 10% of the drivers be women before the end of the contract.

Further agreements will be signed with other Phase III concessionaires in the coming days to continue the fleet renewal. With this move, Bogotá reinforces its leadership in smart, efficient, and sustainable public transportation.
