Electric Mobility in Mexico Withstands Global Tariff Pressures

Movilidad eléctrica en México

Despite recent trade tensions and the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States in early April, electric mobility in Mexico continues to show resilience.

While countries like China, the EU, and South Korea face duties of up to 46%, Mexico remains excluded under the USMCA agreement, preserving a strategic advantage for its automotive industry.

Productive plants and electric mobility in Mexico

According to the Automotive Directory, only $78.6 million were invested in electric mobility projects in Q1 2025 — a drastic 97.4% drop compared to the same period last year.

However, initiatives such as Proyecto Olinia, the national Plan México, and a stronger domestic production outlook suggest a slow but purposeful recovery.

Leading the sector is Ford’s Hermosillo plant, now the most productive in Mexico with 87,857 units built from January to March.

The facility operates at 117.14% of its installed capacity and includes hybrid variants like the Maverick pickup, showcasing the persistence of electric mobility in Mexico.

Other key players include GM Ramos Arizpe, producing EVs like the Blazer and Equinox, and Honda Celaya, which recently started producing the Acura ADX. These automakers confirm that, even amid regulatory uncertainty, electric mobility remains a strategic focus.

A strategic sector in transition

The number of new projects grew by 15.7%, signaling a shift towards more deliberate and diversified investments. In total, Mexico received 59 automotive projects from 13 countries in Q1 2025, totaling $2.57 billion.

Electric mobility in Mexico still faces significant challenges, but the combination of domestic policy, trade protection, and growing technological capabilities positions the country as a resilient and evolving automotive hub for the Americas.
