The Enel Group unveiled this week an unprecedented project to boost electric mobility in Latin America. The prestigious company started operations of the first Electro Service Station for the region in Santiago de Chile.
The new infrastructure will allow buses, trucks, last mile vehicles, cab fleets and private cars to recharge electric energy 24 hours a day.
It will have 23 energy supply points at a 100% electric service station, called “multipurpose” by Enel. With this installation, the company seeks to solve the great difficulties existing for users to find places to power their electric cars without having to wait long lines or worry about the autonomy of their vehicles.
In addition, Enel detailed on its official press release that it will have rest areas, a biodiversity project and environmentally friendly landscaping, moving towards carbon neutrality through transport electrification across all its segments.
Likewise, the building will have 36 photovoltaic panels on its roofs, which have a self-generation capacity of 16.2 kWh, energy that will contribute complementarily to the operation of the Electro Station.
Global Vision for the Future
Enel’s work is not only based on the contribution to new technologies and enrichment of the business model, but also seeks to massively support the fight against climate change.
In this regard, Paolo Pallotti, General Manager of Enel Chile, emphasized that the world is facing a climate crisis that requires commitment and immediate action, which is why he considers electrification to be an effective response to significantly reduce emissions by replacing fossil fuels with clean energy.
“We are working to promote and enable electromobility. Today’s milestone is a great step forward in this direction, which allows us to have more sustainable cities with a better quality of life for all,” he added.
The Electro Station infrastructure is designed to be efficient and flexible in order to maximize its use, reducing 240 tons of CO2 associated with transportation per year.
Bringing Together the Public and Private Sectors
Experts on the mobility area have emphasized the need for governments and private companies to join forces to achieve the energy transition required by Latin America.
In this case, Enel’s work has been supported by the Chilean authorities, since the inauguration of the station was attended by José Luis Domínguez, Minister of Transport and Communications, and Marcelo Fernández, Minister of the Environment.
Domínguez pointed out that electromobility and its implementation for public transport, private and commercial vehicles is one of the pillars for achieving Carbon Neutrality by the 2050 deadline, as it represents approximately 17% of the reductions required to reach this goal.
For his part, Fernandez stated that there is currently a gap to achieve carbon neutrality and a very important focus is on the transition to electromobility, since transportation in Chile is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases”.
