Enel X transforms Public Transportation in Latin America

What seemed a distant future for Latin America is now a visible reality. The region has undergone major changes regarding sustainable projects, electric technology, mobility and innovation investments along with environmental protection.

City electrification and the energy transition have taken on great significance in major cities, where alliances between public and private sectors are a fundamental factor for developing and financing models with these characteristics.

Regarding the non-governmental sector, there are transport and energy companies leading the electric mobility acceleration, a scenario in which Enel X, efficiency services division and Latin America’s leader in electromobility, is actively contributing with innovative solutions to promote changes that will leave fossil fuels behind.

Currently, the region has more than 2 thousand electric buses, with Chile and Colombia as the countries with the highest number of these vehicles. Brazil, Peru and Uruguay have also made great progress, with authorities and companies working together to promote electrification in their main cities.

Mauricio Bezzeccheri, CEO of Enel for Latin America, assures that energy transition raises fundamental challenges for the region, such as electrification, which will enable “replacing fossil fuels with electricity, where we are committed to massive development of electric mobility, public and private, while promoting circular cities, where material and energy flows are redefined, as well as the use of goods and services aimed at improving quality life for citizens, and positively impacting the planet”.

One of the company’s goals is to execute strategies that will lead its customers to decarbonization, in order to include in its policies the environmental responsibility demanded by the planet, given the radical changes in climate and natural disasters.

Enel X also aims to implement solutions promoting better energy processes, making the market more competitive through electrification, improved energy use and consumption, with digitalization as an innovative element.

Services

The company has implemented high-tech business models, such as Ebus-as-a-Service (EaaS), an end-to-end solution that provides a set of services such as financing for buses, Smart Cities services, and efficient recharging infrastructure for buses and depots.

It also offers Charging-as-a-Service (CaaS) innovation, which integrates charging equipment leasing, maintenance and electric power, all tools used to give customers the opportunity to join Enel X’s entire electric mobility ecosystem.

The technological giant provides different ways to promote sustainable development, which has positioned Enel among the most relevant players regarding electric public transport implementation in the region, offering financing services, smart recharging and infrastructure, as well as clean energy to more than 1,300 electric buses operating in Latin America.

Regional Progress

Enel X had strategic locations in Latin America to develop projects. One of them is Santiago de Chile, with 500 Ebuses, 11 electrical stations and over 245 charging stations. The southern nation has positioned as the second country in the world for electric bus circulation after China.

Colombia is another hotspot in Latin America. Bogotá has just been successful in securing a new contract with Transmilenio to supply 878 buses and six new electric terminals equipped with 412 recharging points, as part of the #UnNuevoAire (A New Air) plan.

Enel X has also achieved groundbreaking progress in Brazil, Uruguay and Peru, showing that the electrification potential in Latin America is huge, allowing the company to carry out different financing projects, proving to be both technically and economically viable and sustainable practices, thus strengthening a scalable growth which will help to meet the demand of hundreds of cities in the region.

The company also reached another historical milestone by signing an agreement with AMP Capital, allowing them to continue identifying investment opportunities in public transportation and electric infrastructure in the region, to further promote the sustainable development of the major cities.
