In a move that could reshape the automotive industry, Jeff Bezos has backed the launch of the Slate electric pick-up, an innovative proposal unveiled at an event in Los Angeles.

According to TechCrunch, this U.S.-made vehicle promises a price of just $20,000 and offers an unprecedented level of customization.

The Slate electric pick-up doesn’t aim for excessive luxury or unattainable technology. Its base version features a simple two-seat cabin in matte gray, allowing users to personalize the vehicle to their liking.

From aesthetic tweaks to a full transformation into a five-seater SUV, versatility is at the core of its design.

Staying true to its philosophy of simplicity, the Slate electric pick-up foregoes touchscreens and complex systems. Instead, it offers a universal mount for mobile devices and a dashboard designed for a Bluetooth speaker. Its exterior is made for easy vinyl application, letting owners change styles quickly.

Balanced performance for everyday use

The base model of the Slate electric pick-up features a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 52.7 kWh battery offering a range of up to 241 kilometers (150 miles).

An extended 84.3 kWh battery option will be available, increasing the range to 386 kilometers (240 miles), with fast charging enabled by Tesla’s NACS system.

One of the most attractive features of the Slate electric pick-up is its adaptability. Users can add an SUV kit to install a second row of seats, or easily revert to the original configuration without the need for specialized workshops.

Urban-ready dimensions and safety

Measuring 4.4 meters long, 1.7 meters wide, and 1.7 meters tall, the Slate electric pick-up is designed for city mobility. It can handle a payload of 635 kilograms and tow up to 453 kilograms.

Regarding safety, it aims for a five-star USNCAP rating, featuring automatic emergency braking, stability control, pedestrian recognition, and a backup camera.

Compared to more expensive and flashy options like Tesla’s Cybertruck, the Slate electric pick-up provides a practical, affordable solution focused on real-world needs.

Jeff Bezos has chosen common sense over spectacle, and while time will tell its success, it has already caught the attention of the entire automotive industry.
