Latam Mobility Chile: Minister of Transport Highlighted the Public and Private Sectors’ Importance of Working Together to Promote Sustainable Mobility

The first day of Latam Mobility Chile, a meeting that brings together distinguished companies and public sector leaders to address issues aimed at promoting sustainable mobility in the region, was attended by the prestigious Minister of Transport and Telecommunications of Chile, Juan Carlos Muñoz.

The minister was in charge of inaugurating the activity on the morning of August 30. Later, in an exclusive interview for Latam Mobility, he referred to the plans that the Chilean authorities have in terms of mobility.

He also stressed the importance of establishing ties between the public and private sectors, with the goal of making means of transportation more environmentally friendly and improving the quality of life of citizens.
During his speech, Muñoz stressed that the forum organized by Latam Mobility is a very important space for all actors to converge in favor of sustainable mobility.

“Promoting sustainable mobility requires a process through a public-private partnership, in which the authorities define rules, incentives and encourage change, but it is the operators who are in charge of important aspects such as assessing which financing and operating models are the right ones,” explained Minister Muñoz.

Transport Progress

During the interview carried out on the first day of Latam Mobility Chile, Muñoz took the opportunity to reveal that the country has already received 800 electric buses and expects 1,000 more to join the public transport fleet, highlighting that Santiago is the city with the most electrified buses in the world outside China, the leading country in electric mobility.

“We have a very strong focus on electromobility in public transport, which is why we want to reach other places where we have not yet arrived with these new technologies,” he emphasized.

The minister pledged to work hard to ensure that Chileans can move around more efficiently. In this sense, he affirmed that his administration will focus on optimizing mass transportation as a more sustainable means of transportation, and announced the implementation of a wide network of bicycle lanes where people can travel with electric bicycles and scooters. In addition, he reported that they will open approximately 2,000 kilometers of pedestrian spaces for citizens to move around safely.

“We have to convince citizens that change is possible!” he concluded.

Minister Muñoz’s participation led the first day of debates at Latam Mobility Chile, held at the W Hotel in Santiago, where topics referred to sustainable mobility, charging infrastructure, clean fuels and the vision of prominent automotive industry manufacturers on the evolution of the region in the aforementioned aspects were discussed.
