Megaflux: “Mexico to Require 400,000 Electric Buses in the Next 20 Years to Renew Public Transportation Fleet”

Megaflux

MegaFlux, a company specialized in electromobility, has estimated that Mexico will need around 400 thousand electric buses in the next two decades to replace its aging public transportation fleet.

This transition responds to the growing need to modernize the urban mobility system and reduce polluting emissions.

Currently, the average age of the trucks and buses that provide service in the country is around 20 years, which makes it urgent to implement sustainable solutions.

According to Roberto Gottfried, CEO of MegaFlux, the electrification of public transportation is not only an environmental necessity, but also a viable economic strategy.

“Operating an electric bus is more economical than a hydrocarbon one, as the savings in fuel and maintenance justify the initial investment,” he said.

Taruk, The First Electric Bus “Made in Mexico”.

MegaFlux has developed the Taruk model, the first electric bus manufactured in Mexico, designed for medium-sized cities and with a capacity for 60 passengers.

This vehicle has been certified as “Made in Mexico” and is the result of a collaboration between MegaFlux and Dina, the company responsible for the construction of the chassis and bodywork. Initial production contemplates 2,000 units per year, with the possibility of scaling up to 6,000.

The UNAM Engineering Institute and UAM Iztapalapa have participated in the validation of the bus systems, ensuring their efficiency and safety. In addition, the battery pack has been designed and assembled in Mexico, with imported lithium cells.

The cost of the bus ranges between 5 and 6 million pesos, with autonomy options of 180, 250 and 385 kilometers, adapting to the different needs of urban routes. Tests carried out with RTP have shown that the model can travel up to 286 kilometers in a single day of operation.

In an interview with El Universal, Gottfried stressed the importance of a government commitment to accelerate the energy transition in public transportation.

“In India, the government tenders the purchase of 20,000 electric buses per year to electrify the national fleet. That happens when there is a clear strategy. In Mexico, 400 thousand electric buses are required in 20 years, about 20 thousand a year, as in India,” he said.

MegaFlux‘s initiative seeks to drive the energy transition in Mexican public transportation, promoting cleaner and more efficient mobility. The company hopes that the government will adopt similar measures to ensure the effective electrification of urban transport.
