Mexico Accelerates Sustainable Freight Transportation with Electric Trucks

Sustainable freight transportation in Mexico is undergoing a major transformation, driven by the global need to cut greenhouse gas emissions and the urgency to modernize logistics.

Companies like Daimler Truck México are taking the lead in the electrification of heavy-duty trucks, setting the pace for a cleaner freight future.

According to Fernando Mar, Senior Manager of Strategy and Electrification at Daimler Truck México, transitioning to electric heavy vehicles is a “key opportunity,” despite infrastructure and upfront cost challenges. Models like the e-Cascadia and e-M2 —developed for long-haul and urban operations respectively— significantly reduce CO₂ emissions and mark a turning point for sustainable freight.

A report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicates that electric vehicles could slash pollutant emissions by up to 70% compared to internal combustion engines, making them essential for addressing climate change.

Artificial intelligence: optimizing freight operations

Beyond electrification, AI-powered technologies are playing a pivotal role in modern logistics. Tools like Enlace Freightliner 3.0 use real-time data to improve route planning, optimize energy usage, and enhance operational efficiency, leading to cost reductions and environmental gains.

One of the most significant barriers to widespread adoption of electric trucks in Mexico is charging infrastructure.

While cities like Monterrey and Mexico City are implementing charging points, nationwide coverage is still lacking. In response, public-private initiatives are working to expand this essential network.

Electric mobility also holds economic promise. According to the World Bank, a low-carbon economy transition could create up to 2 million green jobs in Latin America by 2030, many of them in the transport sector.
