Mexico Advances in Public Policy with the “Promoters of Mobility” Program

Investments by Tesla, Kia and other large manufacturers that will significantly advance in the production of electric vehicles has shaken the electromobility market in Mexico.

Like any ecosystem, not only the private sector can massify these new technologies, so government entities are emerging initiatives for the transition and rapid adoption of electrified cars.

One of these proposals comes from the government of the state of Monterrey to encourage greater participation of parents to avoid traffic congestion at school entrance and exit times, through the “Mobility Promoters” program.

Maximum Reach

The project is being developed by the municipal Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Development (Seduso) with the support of Mayor Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas.

The public institution reported that it plans to take the program to as many schools in the municipality as possible, prioritizing those that suffer the most road problems in the surrounding area.

“Thank you very much for protecting the girls and boys of this city and, above all, for sowing that little seed of road culture that many of us are missing,” said the official in a statement issued by the government of Monterrey.

“This is a shared effort because the schools and the government do it, but also moms and dads do it to teach people that here is a safe school, here you have to drive calmly, slowly and responsibly because here we are taking care of the most important thing we have,” he said.

For her part, Brenda Sanchez, Head of Seduso, explained what the plan consists of. “Today we are starting a paradigm shift in the way we travel to schools to make it safer. Mobility promoters are citizens trained by the Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Development who collaborate in the regulation of traffic in the vicinity of educational centers to ensure road safety for girls, boys, and young people and promote sustainable mobility.”

He detailed that all road users must observe the indications of the mobility promoters during traffic surveillance in the exercise of their attributions.

In addition to training, the aim is to raise awareness among the school community on the importance of sustainable mobility and road safety. It also includes improving road signage, disseminating traffic regulations and developing the skills of those involved in directing traffic.
