Mexico: Cancún to Feature New Charging Stations

The Institute of Mobility of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo), Mexico, has unveiled a plan to establish five electromobility corridors for Cancún and the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres, equipped with modern infrastructure such as bus stops, sidewalks, and charging stations.

This project, supported by the state government, is part of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo and will be integrated with the network of the Maya Train, a key development for the region.

Advocates of the initiative highlight its goal of transforming local mobility into a cleaner and more efficient model.

Key Highlights

The Institute presented the plan during a forum featuring national and international experts, including Young Tae Kim, Secretary-General of the OECD International Transport Forum, who praised Mexico’s progress in electromobility while emphasizing the need for greater investment in infrastructure and public-private partnerships.

Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, head of Semarnat, stressed that the transition to electromobility is crucial for combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

She highlighted the importance of leveraging global agreements, such as the Glasgow Pact, and suggested the adoption of hybrid vehicles as an initial step toward this transformation.
