Mining Potential in Sonora to Help Drive Electromobility Projects in Mexico

The Governor of Sonora, Mexico, Alfonso Durazo, informed that he is making key moves with the objective of taking advantage of mining in the state to promote electric mobility projects.

The regional governor met with the Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, with the vision of continuing efforts to attract investment for mining projects, especially those linked to electromobility and semiconductor production.

During the past year, Governor Durazo made several tours of Europe and Asia, seeking to consolidate alliances and attract investment from companies related to these strategic sectors.

Important Figures

According to data from El Financiero de México, by the end of 2023, Sonora’s metallurgical production reached 31.4% of the total mining extraction in the country, surpassing other important mining entities such as Zacatecas, Durango and Chihuahua.

Sonora particularly stood out as the main national copper producer, contributing with 77% of the total extracted nationally.

In addition, El Financiero continues, it experienced significant growth in gold production, reaching 30,000 kilograms in the first nine months of 2023, the highest figure nationally during that period.

Sonora continues to be a focus of attention for mining investment. The region has managed to maintain the operation of international mining companies, and recently, Riverside Resources announced promising gold and silver discoveries at the Cecilia mining project.

According to estimates by Observatorio Minero Mx, around 146,000 families depend directly or indirectly on the job opportunities generated by this economic activity in the region.

Latam Mobility Starts 2024 Tour in Mexico

Latam Mobility, Latin America’s largest sustainable mobility community, will arrive in Monterrey on February 8 with the “North America Mobility and Net Zero Summit 2024”.

The meeting will bring together industry leaders, major automotive manufacturers and prominent representatives from the public sector, who will offer perspectives and projects on sustainable mobility in Mexico and the region.
