The inclusion of micro-mobility represents an important alternative for the decarbonization process, in addition to being an efficient means of transportation for citizens.
Bogota currently has one of the largest networks of bicycle routes in Latin America, and the authorities seek to continue promoting the use of light vehicles.
In this regard, the District Mobility Secretariat of the Colombian capital, together with the European Federation of Cyclists are developing the “SCAP” project (Safer Cycling Advocate Program) that seeks to promote the bicycle as an alternative mode of transport, including for urban logistics.

According to Bogotá authorities, each plaza receives an electro-assisted cargo bicycle. These light vehicles must be used properly, in accordance with traffic, transport and road safety regulations. In addition, they will be covered by a single guarantee for damages caused to third parties.
Valentina Acuña, Deputy Director of Private Transportation, reaffirmed her commitment to continue promoting sustainable mobility. “It is a great achievement to implement this pilot in the marketplaces, which shows that efficient and sustainable last-mile cycling is possible in the city.”
This work has been advanced hand in hand with the Institute for Social Economy (IPES), the entity in charge of managing the market places that receive the cargo bicycles, according to some technical demographic specifications required by the project.
“The use of bicycles for households in our District Market Places is of vital importance. In addition to promoting efficient mobility and reducing vehicular congestion, bicycles are a sustainable option that contributes to the care of the environment,” said Andrea Zharay Orejarena, Deputy Director of Entrepreneurship of the Institute for Social Economy.
The District Mobility Secretariat will monitor and analyze users’ perception of these cargo bicycles during the pilot implementation period and will collect general data to define medium and long-term actions.
