My Electric Taxi Program Expands to Chile’s Southern Region

The Mayor of Natales, Chile, Antonieta Oyarzo, met with representatives of the Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Energy, the Energy Sustainability Agency and the Provincial Presidential Delegation of Última Esperanza to discuss electromobility projects.

During the meeting, various initiatives to introduce electric vehicles were discussed, highlighting the “My Electric Taxi” program, which seeks to replace combustion cars in light transport with 100% electric vehicles.

Oyarzo stressed the importance of informing public transport unions, the main beneficiaries of the program, about the potential of electric mobility.

“It is essential that this information is known by the unions, who would be protagonists in the renewal towards a more efficient use of energy and more environmentally friendly,” he said.

Joint Effort

The Seremi of Energy, Sergio Cuitiño Valdivia, stressed the need to adopt clean technologies in order to advance towards Chile’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

He also indicated that the Ministry of Energy is collecting data from the unions to know their interest in electromobility and to develop incentive policies for electric transport in the region. “We want to encourage its use and review our subsidiary role to promote the entry of electric cars,” said Cuitiño.

Bogdan Gjuranovic, Coordinator of the “My Electric Taxi” program of the Energy Sustainability Agency, explained that the program offers co-financing so that cab and bus drivers can acquire an electric vehicle and a domestic charger.

With the slogan “Get on board the green future”, “My Electric Taxi” already operates in regions such as Atacama, Antofagasta and the Metropolitan Region. Now the possibility of implementing the program in Magallanes is being evaluated, considering Natales as a pilot community.

With the collaboration between the public and private sectors, Natales could become one of the first municipalities in the region to introduce electric mobility in public transportation, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards a more sustainable future.
