Panama Canal Incorporates 20 BYD Electric Vehicles

The Panama Canal incorporated 20 new BYD Yuan Plus model electric vehicles during this fiscal year. According to the “Octanos Media” portal, these are medium SUVs with a capacity for five passengers that seek to be efficient and environmentally friendly.

The 20 new electrified cars went into operation in July and were acquired as a replacement for medium-sized pickup trucks and gasoline-powered internal combustion sedans, which seeks to reduce the Canal’s carbon footprint and the adoption of cleaner and more sustainable technologies.

According to the technical specifications presented by BYD, the Yuan Plus model offers a range of 410 kilometers per full charge and a power of 150 kW, meeting the Canal’s operational needs.

Equipped with front-wheel drive and a blade-type battery, the vehicles are powered by a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor for good performance.

The slow charging time of approximately eight hours allows for efficient overnight recharging, ensuring that the vehicles are ready for daily use.

With this acquisition, Canal seeks to reinforce its commitment to sustainability by incorporating vehicles that will contribute to the reduction of approximately 150 tons of CO2 per year.

Beatriz González, Decarbonization Specialist of the Panama Canal, said that it is essential that institutions, companies, communities and individuals are aware of the importance of reducing their carbon footprint.

“These emissions go into the atmosphere and their accumulation causes global warming, which is reflected in extreme weather phenomena such as droughts, fires, heat waves, floods, landslides, among others,” she said.

With the acquisition of the vehicles, the Panama Canal will not only reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, but will also contribute to a more efficient and environmentally friendly operation of one of the world’s most important shipping lanes.
