Panama incorporates 60 new electric buses

Authorities in Panama announced the purchase of 60 new electric buses as part of their strategy for transitioning to a more efficient and sustainable transportation system.

Since the introduction of electric vehicles in 2015, the country has experienced steady growth in the adoption of this technology.

According to data from BN Américas, in 2024, Panama added 773 electric cars to its vehicle fleet, representing 1.42% of total new vehicle sales.

In January 2025, 76 electric cars were sold, surpassing in a single month the combined sales of January 2023 and 2024.

Growth in Figures

The growth in electric mobility has been consistent. In 2021, 82 electric vehicles were sold; in 2022, the number increased to 160; in 2023, it reached 440 units, and by October 2024, 773 electric cars were already on the roads.

With these figures, Panama has accumulated 1,508 electric vehicles in circulation, according to the Panama Automobile Dealers Association (ADAP).

The energy transition in the transportation sector is progressing with clear goals for 2030, including the electrification of 10% to 20% of private vehicles and ensuring that between 25% and 40% of new car sales correspond to this technology.

Regarding public transportation, it is projected that between 15% and 35% of bus concession fleets will be electric and that between 25% and 50% of the public bus fleet will transition to electric mobility.

The purchase of 60 electric buses represents a concrete step in this process and will directly benefit public transportation users, reducing emissions and operational costs in the long term.
