The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) of Peru has amended the Regulation for the Single National Vehicle Plate to enhance the vehicle identification system by incorporating new categories established in the National Vehicle Regulations and measures to promote electromobility.
In this update, the governing body for transportation and traffic has revised the technical and registrable parameters of the Single National Vehicle Plate, particularly for category L vehicles (motorcycles, mototaxis, quadricycles).
In line with promoting the use of clean energy in transportation, which the MTC has been advocating, a distinctive mark will be added to the plates of electric and hybrid vehicles. This will include the text “hybrid or electric,” supporting sustainability and energy security.

Through this regulatory measure, the MTC reaffirms its commitment to modernizing the vehicle identification system, promoting sustainable mobility, and ensuring safety in transportation.
Other Changes
Among the main modifications introduced by the MTC is the enlargement of the plate dimensions for category L vehicles, from 110×190 mm to 170×200 mm, featuring larger digits and contrasting colors (white background with black characters). Additionally, the plates will include an RFID device.
This aims to improve the visibility of plates and facilitate vehicle identification, thereby strengthening enforcement efforts.
To optimize the Coding System, the category L vehicles will now have alphanumeric plates with 3 letters and 4 digits (e.g., ACB-0000), replacing the current system of 2 letters and 4 digits.
This change will increase the possible combinations from 360,000 to over 6 million vehicles per registration zone, thereby preventing a potential system collapse.
The regulatory measure also incorporates categories L6 and L7 (quadricycles used for passenger or cargo transport) into the plate system, ensuring accurate identification within the National Land Transport System.
