Peru Signs Cooperation Agreement with Japan to Promote Electric Mobility

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) of Peru has proposed to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation with the aim of joining efforts to promote and develop initiatives in renewable energies, electric mobility, and efficient energy management.

The Peruvian government’s official website details that it highlighted Peru’s participation in the international event LATAM-Japan Hydrogen Workshop 2024, held in Tokyo, describing it as highly productive.

The event included visits to research centers and production plants in various regions of Japan, providing valuable conclusions and opportunities for collaboration.

Far-reaching Collaboration Rómulo Mucho, Peru’s Minister of Energy, underscored the importance of Japanese cooperation for the country to advance in the use of solar, wind, geothermal and other renewable energy sources.

The official also referred to the implementation of energy storage technologies and smart grids. He also expressed his interest in developing joint projects that maximize the use of clean energies, including hydrogen in its different forms, ammonia, and derivatives such as e-fuel, to generate new opportunities and accelerate investment in this sector.

“Peru has an immense potential in renewable resources, with 900 gigawatts of solar energy, 22 gigawatts of wind energy, 70 gigawatts of hydraulic energy, and 3 gigawatts of geothermal energy, which will allow us to increase our energy security in the long term within the framework of a transition to clean energies,” said the minister.

Mr. Mucho highlighted the great opportunities for complementarity between the economies of Peru and Japan and assured that the signing of this memorandum of cooperation will strengthen the alliance between both nations.
