Peru’s Minister of Transport and Communications (MTC), Raúl Pérez Reyes, announced that in the coming weeks the government will issue a supreme decree to promote electromobility in the country.
“I hope that in the next few weeks we will be able to issue the supreme decree aimed at creating an electromobility ecosystem to help us have a fleet of electric private vehicles and public transportation in the next five years,” he said.
The official added that they have been putting together a strategy for several months and a whole series of regulatory quality analyses have to be carried out. “We have been discussing this with the Peruvian Automotive Association and other important players in the automotive sector for private and public service vehicles,” he said.

Public-Private Partnership
During the presentation of a fleet of electric vehicles that will operate in Peru, thanks to the alliance between the companies BYD and Luz del Sur, Raúl Pérez Reyes highlighted that the strategy promotes electromobility, but not only with tax measures that are under discussion in the Congress of the Republic, but also to help the entry and use of electric cars to accelerate.
“Electromobility is, without a doubt, an important agent of change. Peru has the appropriate energy matrix for us to have a consistent public policy and not only based on the incorporation of technology, but on the real benefit for all citizens,” he said.
“We have wonderful natural resources and some of them allow us to have a combination of clean electricity generation, since almost 50% is hydroelectric and the other 50% is thermal; but with combined cycle that pollutes very little in terms of CO2 emissions,” he explained.
