Chile’s Minister of Transport, Juan Carlos Muñoz, expressed the importance of electromobility for the country through public policies.
“Electromobility has been an important policy that transcends governments, and there are commitments that we have been making as a country.
For example, by 2035, all new vehicles entering the country must have zero emissions”, he said at the forum ‘Electromobility in Chile: Driving the future of sustainable transport’, organized by La Tercera and La Araucana.
He valued the increase in electric vehicles, but acknowledged that there are countries that are advancing much faster than Chile. For that reason, he points to the relevance they have given to public transportation.

“In Santiago, we are already the city outside China with the most electric buses in the world, with 2,500 units circulating. In addition, in the next 18 months, 1,500 more will be added, reaching close to 4,000 electric buses. This not only contributes to climate change, but also to improving the quality of service”.
Charging Infrastructure
Regarding private vehicles, Muñoz indicated that an active role of the State is key to overcome obstacles in terms of infrastructure and accessibility.
From the private sector, Francisco Sepúlveda, General Manager of Caja La Araucana, pointed out that “for us, sustainability is not only a commitment, but also a way of contributing to the social and economic well-being of our members”.
In this line, he presented the Green Commitment Credit, which offers preferential conditions for the acquisition of electric vehicles, such as cars, scooters, motorcycles and bicycles.
For her part, Andrea Castro, Copec Voltex’s General Manager, explained how the company is setting the pace in the creation of charging infrastructure.
“We are working so that, by the end of this year, all regions of the country will have fast chargers”, she said.
She also stressed that Copec’s focus is not only on expanding the network, but also on ensuring that it is efficient and sustainable: “We want this change to be not only an urban trend, but to reach all communities, because electromobility must be inclusive”.
