Quito Modernizes Its Transportation with Electric Trolleybuses

Ecuador: trolebuses eléctricos en Quito apuestan por la movilidad sostenible

Ecuador takes a step forward in sustainable mobility with the arrival of electric trolleybuses in Quito, a fleet of 46 units manufactured by Yutong Bus.

These vehicles, which arrived from Shanghai, are part of a 60-bus acquisition by the municipality to modernize the Trolebús system. The remaining 14 units will be integrated in the coming days.

A Key Advancement for Sustainable Mobility

The official handover of the electric trolleybuses in Quito took place at Parque de la Niña, in the northern part of the city, attended by Mayor Pabel Muñoz, representatives of the Chinese manufacturer, and citizens who use the service.

During the event, Muñoz emphasized the significance of this initiative in reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in Ecuador’s capital.

According to the mayor, the implementation of these vehicles will have an environmental impact equivalent to planting 400,000 additional trees, reinforcing Quito’s position as a model for eco-friendly mobility in Latin America.

Features and Benefits of the New Trolleybuses

These electric trolleybuses in Quito will replace part of the fleet that has been operating for over 30 years, serving 150,000 passengers daily.

Currently, the Trolebús system directly impacts 59.37% of Quito’s population, making it a key component of urban transportation.

The General Manager of Quito’s Public Metropolitan Passenger Transport Company (EPMTPQ), Xavier Vásquez, highlighted the benefits of this new fleet:

Reduction of 8,700 tons of CO2 per year
50% decrease in noise pollution
Improved safety and accessibility for passengers

The new electric trolleybuses in Quito are articulated, 18 meters long, and have a capacity of 160 passengers. Additionally, they include dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, bicycles, and baby strollers. Their features include:

  • Internal information screens
  • 20 security cameras and a panic button
  • Ventilation system and USB chargers
  • Inclusive signage with a gender perspective

Technology Adapted to Quito’s Geography

Due to Quito’s steep terrain and sections without overhead power lines, these electric trolleybuses operate with a dual power source, combining catenary supply and battery power.

Yang Hao, Yutong Bus’ International Client Manager, explained that this technology allows for greater flexibility in route planning and a 30% to 50% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional diesel buses, optimizing operational costs.

Electric Trolleybuses in Quito: Cleaner and More Efficient Public Transport

The new electric trolleybuses in Quito, painted in the city’s blue and red colors and featuring the slogan “Quito Renace”, are now running on the route connecting the El Recreo (south) and El Labrador (north) stations.

The launch was warmly welcomed by citizens, accompanied by a performance from the municipal band. María Mazabanda, a regular commuter, celebrated the arrival of these buses, highlighting Quito’s commitment to sustainable mobility and advanced Chinese technology.

With this modernization, Quito moves closer to its goal of becoming a leading capital in sustainable mobility, improving residents’ quality of life and reducing the environmental impact of public transport.
