The City of São Paulo has reinforced its commitment to clean mobility by adding 115 electric buses to its public transportation system.
This batch includes five units equipped with cutting-edge technology: intelligent security cameras integrated with the Smart Sampa program.
With this addition, the city now operates a total of 728 electric vehicles, 527 of which are battery-powered. The fleet renewal represents significant environmental benefits, preventing the annual emission of over 10,000 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

Fleet Details
Mayor Ricardo Nunes emphasized during the presentation that each electric unit replaces the consumption of 35,000 liters of diesel per year.
“We’re radically transforming our public transportation: improving air quality, enhancing road safety, and providing better working conditions for operators,” he stated.
The five buses with video surveillance systems feature front and rear cameras connected in real-time to the Smart Sampa control center. This technology will enable:
- Identification of individuals wanted by authorities
- Prevention and documentation of sexual harassment cases
- Recording of incidents such as thefts or passenger altercations
The total investment for this fleet renewal reached R242 million (approximately $45 million), funded through subsidies. All vehicles come equipped with modern amenities including air conditioning, USB ports, and free Wi-Fi.
“We’re building a more humane and healthier city. These actions will directly impact the quality of life for São Paulo residents,” said Renato Nalini, Secretary of Climate Change.
The new buses will begin operating immediately across various city routes, managed by transportation companies Movebuss, Sambaíba, Express, Transcap, and Campo Belo.
SPTrans is already evaluating additional clean technologies, including natural gas and biomethane-powered buses, to continue transforming public transportation.
This initiative solidifies São Paulo’s leadership in sustainable mobility across Latin America, maintaining Brazil’s largest electric bus fleet.
